Soap against viruses

How to protect yourself from coronavirus. Soap, antiseptics and voluntary self-isolation

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ukrainians are looking for effective means of protection against the virus. We will explain why ordinary soap is better than any antiseptic, and how voluntary self-isolation will protect you from infection.

After the discovery of coronavirus, a huge number of studies and tests were carried out. It is scientifically proven that COVID-19 spreads faster through contact with surfaces. And this means that you are more likely to get infected from handrails or door handles than directly from a person. Therefore, the only effective preventative measure for infection is hand washing. An antiseptic is only an alternative that you can resort to in view of the lack of the ability to rinse your hands with soap. In other situations, WHO strongly recommends washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water to protect against COVID-19.

Soap as a way to protect yourself from coronavirus

According to studies conducted by the World Health Organization, coronavirus is stored on solid surfaces from several hours to several days. Viability of the virus depends on external conditions: temperature and humidity. Do not forget that COVID-19 is quite “weighty”. It is difficult to linger in the air, quickly settles to the ground, railings, door handles. Therefore, the surface of the virus is transmitted more easily. Contact with an infected person (subject to distance and other recommended precautions) is not as bad as contact with an infected surface.

Here it is worth recalling the statistics. They say that a person touches his face more than 20 times in one hour. Therefore, contact with infected surfaces is an ideal way for COVID-19 to enter the human body.

Masks do not protect against the virus 100%. They are recommended to be used only by sick people, employees of medical and other specialized institutions, in order to prevent infection by contact with infected people. But it is worth remembering that the mask is another reason to touch your face with infected hands.

Coronavirus has an important feature - the presence of spiked protein on the surface in the form of spikes. It is this protein that mimics the molecules of the human ACE2 protein. Our receptors regard these membranes as “their own,” and therefore pass them into the cell. After that, the virus becomes the master of the situation, getting the opportunity to multiply. This is how infection occurs.

Only soap can destroy the blende shell, which mimics human protein. At the same time, the temperature of the water that is washed by the hands does not matter. Water alone kills viruses only at a temperature of 100 degrees Celsius. In other cases, assistive products come to the rescue. However, washing your hands is still better in warm water. Let’s explain why. In cold water, fatty substances dissolve worse, so the quality of the process decreases. Therefore, try to wash your hands with warm water, since the active components of the soap in this case work faster and more efficiently. We also recommend avoiding dryers, and dry your hands after washing with a clean towel.

Experts focus on the fact that now washing hands with soap is a matter of life and death. It is this procedure that can protect the body from the action of the virus. It is noteworthy that liquid and solid soaps show the same effectiveness in combating COVID-19. But the best thing in the fight against viruses is tar tar. It is a safe and natural antiseptic that effectively protects against viruses and bacteria.

Do not forget about the "third hand" - a mobile phone. Be sure to disinfect the device to prevent the spread of the virus.

How to use antiseptics

After the quarantine was announced, the sanitizers instantly disappeared from the shelves. However, this is not the best way to deal with COVID-19. And that's why.

Alcohol antiseptics have a different principle of action than soap. The alcohol base weakens the protein coat, and is also able to destroy the genetic material responsible for the activity of COVID-19. This is only possible if the sanitizer consists of 60% alcohol compounds. Means with a different component composition are practically useless both in the fight against the virus, and in the fight against bacteria and fungi. Sanitizers will slow the growth of microbes, but will not clean the epidermis. Another important aspect is the rules for using an antiseptic. Many people put it on their hands and do not wait for the product to completely dry. This is a blunder. How to use an antiseptic:

  • Apply the product on the entire surface of the hands, including between the fingers, on the wrists and nails.
  • Thoroughly rub the sanitizer for 15-20 seconds until the product is completely absorbed.

However, sanitizers are second in the list of skin sanitizers. The enormous demand for such products provoked a shortage in the market. Many brands have reoriented production in order to provide consumers with the necessary amount of antiseptics. So, the LVMH corporation suspended the production of perfume compositions in order to fully concentrate on the creation of sanitizers. They will be transferred free of charge to the French government and redirected to the country's medical facilities.

Voluntary self-isolation and proper nutrition

Weak immunity is another reason for predisposition to infection. Therefore, during a pandemic, it is worth paying attention to food quality. Give preference to fresh vegetables, fruits, eat complex carbohydrates and enter multivitamins in the diet. Do not forget about physical activity. Light gymnastics, yoga, stretching perfectly strengthen the body and increase resistance to the virus.

But the most important thing to strive for is minimal contact with people. In a pandemic, isolation is critical. Reducing walks, friendships and family interactions, going to the store or pharmacy can stop the spread of COVID-19. This is not only about contacts with people at risk, but about social interaction in general. Experts recommend observing self-isolation, since such an approach will help stop the spread of the virus.
